This extract is taken from Bob Beagrie’s intense performance CD Endeavour, a poem that tells the story of the Captain Cook’s Endeavour and its epic journey to disprove the existence of the great southern continent, seen through the eyes of an enlisted seaman from the North East. This extract starts with an account of the ship’s stay in Tahiti and follows them up to arriving in New Zealand, where they are confronted by Maori Cannibals and the officers assert their ‘civlised’ authority while the seaman chews weevils in his bread for the protein.
