Joby Williams was born in London, and spent time in Spain as a child. After graduating from the University of Nottingham she travelled extensively in Latin America, working as both tour leader and travel writer.  She returned to take a Masters Degree in Social Anthropology and is mid-way through her PhD research, which combines her interest in food and travel. She is a regular contributer to the Books Pages of the Sunday Times, and to numerous travel publications.
