Margaret Rose Handforth was born in Eastfield Lane, near the malt kilns at Castleford during the Second World War. Her father was a coal miner who was left disabled after a roof fall at the pit when he was just 18. Her mother was committed to getting the best education for her children. This is where the seeds were sown for Margaret’s own commitment to lifelong learning. She is the director of Castleford Community Learning Centre and co-compiler of the book of the centre, Wisdom of Our Own.
