Barack Obama was born in Honolulu on 4 August 1961 to an American mother and a Kenyan father. A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School he was elected to the US Senate in 2004 and as the 44th President of the United States in November 2008. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his ‘extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples’.
