Dub Sex Live In Concert

12 June, 2025

Dub Sex filmed live in concert at Manchester Polytechnic, 1988.

This was one of a series of Dub Sex concerts filmed by Malcolm Whitehead and his team at Factory/IKON. The footage was unused at the time and then subsequently sat in a vault for a over a quarter of a century.

The concert captures an energised performance from Dub Sex at a pivotal moment in their development. A few months prior to this concert, the group had returned from a triumphant tour of Germany. Shortly afterwards they removed guitarist Dave Rumney and replaced him with Chris Bridgett. Chris's first involvement with the band was in the studio recording the bands EP, 'The Underneath', which was recorded across sessions in two studios with producer Chris Nagle, starting in a studio in Bradford then finishing off at Strawberry Studio in Stockport. This gig came between the two recording sessions. All four tracks from the EP are performed at the concert.

You can see footage from both studios in this video of 'The Underneath' recording sessions, also filmed by Malcolm Whitehead and Factory/Ikon. Watch here

Mark Hoyle writes about circumstances of the concert in his memoir: Swerve: Dub Sex & Other Stories.
