Iain Matthews | Desert Inn

01 February, 2023

Iain Matthews, Andy Roberts and Tim Renwick at Taverne de L’Olympia, 30th June 1971.

Iain Matthews and Andy Roberts first met in December 1970. ‘Desert Inn’ was the first song they worked on together. The song featured on Iain’s album If You Saw Thro’ My Eyes released two months before the performance recorded here. This was only the second time Iain and Andy had played live together. The first was just three days previously at the Reading Festival. These shows were considered ‘warm-up’ shows for a forthcoming US tour, where Iain and Andy were joined by Richard Thompson on guitar and dulcimer; and their driver, Bobby Ronga, stepped in voluntarily on bass. Three months later Iain, Andy and Bobby were joined by David Richards and Plainsong was formed. Read all about it.
